The American Citizen Services (ACS) section provides information and assistance to U.S. citizens in Australia. American Citizen Services consists of the Passport & Citizenship and Special Consular Services sections. For information on American Citizen Services please make your selection from the options on the menu at the left side of this page.

To be allowed entry into the consular section for routine (non-emergency) services, you must make an appointment online at the Consulate that serves your area. If you can conduct your business by mail or online, please do so. Note: If the particular service you need does not require a personal appearance at the Consulate, you will be instructed to submit your application by mail.

Attention US Citizens: Have you ever considered a career in the US Foreign Service

The US Consulate in Melbourne is pleased to announce that the computer based Foreign Service Officer Test will be held at the US Consulate General, Melbourne on Saturday, October 3, 2009.

Registrations for the test are to be completed online. All registrations for the Foreign Service Officer Test must be completed online via www.careers.state.gov or www.act.org/fsot/. Registration opened August 7th, and the deadline for registration is September 28, 2009.

After Registering applicants will be notified by e-mail with instructions for scheduling a test seat appointment. Upon scheduling a test appointment, the applicant will receive an e-mail confirmation of the appointment date and time. Applicants must provide a copy of their e-mail notification confirming their test date, time and location and a valid U.S. Government issued photo identification, such as a driver’s license, passport, or military ID as proof of identity prior to testing.

Eligibility Requirements to Take the Test

  • Applicants must be citizens of the United States.
  • Applicants must be at least 20 years old on the date they submit their registration package. They must be at least 21 years of age to be appointed as a Foreign Service Officer.
  • Applicants must not be older than 59 years of age on the date they submit their registration package. Appointment as a Foreign Service Officer must occur before an applicant reaches the age of 60.
  • Applicants must be available for worldwide assignment, including Washington, D.C.
  • No applicant will be considered who has previously been separated from the Foreign Service under sections 607, 608, 610, or 611 of the Foreign Service Act of 1980, as amended, or who resigned or retired in lieu of separation under these provisions. In addition, no applicant will be considered who has previously been separated for failure to receive a career appointment under section 306 of the Foreign Service Act of 1980, as amended or who resigned or retired in lieu thereof.
  • No specific educational level or proficiency in a foreign language is required for applicants.
  • Applicants may re-take the test, but only once in a 12-month period.

Attention American Citizens in Adelaide, Darwin and Hobart

There may be a Consular Officer visiting Adelaide, Darwin and Hobart for routing consular services in September 2009. These services include the submission of Consular Report of Birth Abroad applications, US passport applications and some Social Security applications. This is a great opportunity for the US citizens to take advantage of a US Consular officer being in your respective State and avoid having to travel to the US Consulate General in Melbourne.

Register Your Travel Abroad

U.S. citizens living or traveling abroad are encouraged to register with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the State Department’s travel registration website at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/. Those who register will receive updated information on travel and security. Registration also makes it easier for the Embassy or Consulate to make contact in an emergency.
