Nomination of New United States Ambassador to Australia

Canberra — 12 September 2009

12 September 2009

The [Australian] Government warmly welcomes President Obama's decision to nominate Mr Jeff Bleich for the position of United States Ambassador to Australia. Mr Bleich's nomination is subject to the normal process of consideration and confirmation by the United States Senate.

Mr Bleich has a strong background in law, foreign policy and support for social justice and, if his nomination is confirmed, the Government would look forward to working closely with him.

The relationship with the United States is Australia's most important bilateral relationship. Built around the foundation of the Alliance, the relationship is deep, warm and mutually productive. The United States Ambassador to Australia performs a vital role in this key relationship.
